08/21/2020 Changes due to the Alabama Literacy Act:

ED 410   - course description changed.

                Old:

This course will provide prospective candidates with the knowledge of learner, knowledge of subject matter, curriculum and instruction, of the competencies and materials needed to teach reading to children from varying backgrounds of experience in the elementary classroom setting. This course is intended to impart: a) knowledge of reading skills; b) understanding of the reading process as one of the integrated language arts; c) competencies and attitudes for teaching reading; d) knowledge of different approaches and materials used in teaching reading; e) knowledge of objectives in the Alabama Course of Study and the Alabama Reading Initiative; and f) the discovery of the beginning of a personal literacy framework for teaching reading. The specific purpose of this course is to present an eclectic approach to the teaching of reading.

This course addresses the Foundations of Literacy Acquisition, knowledge of diverse reading profiles (including dyslexia), an introduction to developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms, the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction including state and national standards, as well as professional dispositions and practices Admission to the Teacher Education Program required.

                Old:  Teaching of Reading II

Approaches, methods, strategies, and materials necessary to effectively teach and assess literature-based reading for children in early childhood, elementary and middle school settings. Teaching and assessing literature-based reading, and planning formats needed to teach these strategies. Admission to TEP required. Prerequisite(s): ED 410, ED 447, ED 465, EDF 461, and SPED 415. Co-requisite(s): ED 444, ED 445, ED 446, ED 448.

                New: Advanced Teaching of Reading

This course provides advanced analysis and application of structured literacy instruction and developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms. Through targeted experiences in the university and elementary classroom settings, candidates will expand their knowledge and ability to apply multisensory teaching strategies to promote phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, automatic and fluent reading of text with a focus on comprehension, and professional dispositions and practices.  Admission to the Teacher Education Program required. Prerequisite(s): ED 410, ED 447, ED 465, EDF 461, and SPED 415. Co-requisite(s): ED 444, ED 445, ED 446, ED 448.

Old: Methods and Materials for Teaching Language Arts

Selection of strategies and construction of language arts materials for children in early childhood, elementary and middle school settings in teaching language arts across the curriculum. Appropriate laboratory experiences are required. Admission to TEP required. Prerequisite(s): ED 410, ED 447, ED 465, EDF 461 and SPED 415. Prerequisite(s) with concurrency allowed: ED 411, ED 444, ED 445 and ED 448. (Cross-listed with ED 546).

New: Methods and Materials for Multisensory Language Arts Instruction

This course addresses content related to multisensory instructional strategies that can be used to teach reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language as well as the  application of structured literacy instruction and developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms. Through targeted experiences in the university and elementary classroom settings, candidates will expand their knowledge and ability to apply the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction, multisensory teaching strategies to promote vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, phonics and word recognition, automatic and fluent reading of text with a focus on comprehension, and professional dispositions and practices.  Admission to the Teacher Education Program required. Prerequisite(s): ED 410, ED 447, ED 465, EDF 461 and SPED 415. Prerequisite(s) with concurrency allowed: ED 411, ED 444, ED 445 and ED 448. (Cross-listed with ED 546).

09/25/20 - Under the Veterans Educational Benefits heading in Financial Information , inserted the statement “GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More inofrmation about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government Web site at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.” Also inserted the statement “The University of Montevallo is approved by the Alabama state Approving Agency (SAA) to offer VA Educational Benefits (GI Bill ®) to eligible individuals enrolled in approved programs.”
