08/21/2020 Changes due to the Alabama Literacy Act:

                Old:

This course will provide graduate candidates with opportunities to learn and apply theory and pedagogy related to literacy and reading skills instruction. Candidates will be presented with eclectic approach to the teaching of reading and apply this information through an integrated field experience in an elementary classroom setting. During this field experience, candidates will observe, plan, and teach lessons to students with diverse learning needs. This content of this course addresses: a) knowledge of reading skills; b) understanding of the reading process as one of the integrated language arts; c) competencies and attitudes for teaching reading; d) knowledge of different approaches and materials used in teaching reading; e) knowledge of the College-and-Career-Ready Standards (ALCOS); and f) the development of a personal literacy framework for teaching reading.  Admission to the Teacher Education Program Prerequisite(s): ED 501. This course will addresses the Foundations of Literacy Acquisition, knowledge of diverse reading profiles (including dyslexia), an introduction to developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms, the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction including state and national standards , and professional dispositions and practices. Graduate students will complete additional research and/or teaching requirements to demonstrate advanced levels of academic and professional competency. Admission to the Teacher Education Program

 

ED 511   - course description changed.

                Old:

Understanding reading difficulties, practical experiences in diagnosing reading difficulties, a study of corrective treatment, and the ability to develop and implement a directed reading lesson. Guided laboratory experiences with children who exhibit reading limitations that can be aided by the regular classroom teacher. (Cross-listed with ED 411).

                New:

This course provides advanced analysis and application of structured literacy instruction and developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms. Through targeted experiences in the university and elementary classroom settings, candidates will expand their knowledge and ability to apply multisensory teaching strategies to promote phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, automatic and fluent reading of text with a focus on comprehension, and professional dispositions and practices. Graduate students will complete additional research and/or teaching requirements to demonstrate advanced levels of academic and professional competency. Successful completion of Methods Block Coursework required. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Methods Block Coursework Required. (Cross-listed with ED 411).

This course addresses content related to multisensory instructional strategies that can be used to teach reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language as well as the application of structured literacy instruction and developmentally-appropriate assessment techniques that can be used in K-6 classrooms. Through targeted experiences in the university and elementary classroom settings, candidates will expand their knowledge and ability to apply the essential principles and practices of structured literacy instruction, multisensory teaching strategies to promote vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, phonics and word recognition, automatic and fluent reading of text with a focus on comprehension, and professional dispositions and practices. Graduate students will complete additional research and/or teaching requirements to demonstrate advanced levels of academic and professional competency. Open only to students in the alternative master’s program. Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Methods Block Coursework required.  (Cross-listed with ED 446).

 Designed to prepare teachers to teach in inclusive classrooms through the introduction of academic, behavioral, multisensory, and social instructional methods. An emphasis on appropriate laboratory experiences provided. This course has been designated by the UM Service Learning and Community Engagement Committee as a service-learning course. This means that your professor has deliberately interwoven a service experience into your course to meet academic objectives. Prerequisite(s): SPED 507. (Cross-listed with SPED 415).
