Mission

The mission of the College of Education and Human Development is to prepare highly skilled, knowledgeable, and continually developing undergraduate and graduate candidates who make informed decisions, use current evidence and research based practices, and promote healthy and equitable communities through careers in counseling, exercise and nutrition science, family and consumer sciences, leadership, teaching, and technology.

General Education

All students seeking an undergraduate degree at UM must complete a core General Education curriculum that includes courses in English, history, mathematics, the natural sciences, social sciences, fine arts, oral and written communication, and personal development.

The minimum requirements can be found in the General Education Credit Hour Requirements section of the Undergraduate Academic Policies   page.

Minors

The department offers a minor in Deaf Studies .

Elementary Education

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education meets requirements for an Alabama Class B certificate. Study for a B.A. instead of a B.S. degree requires a conference with an advisor.

A traditional minor is not required in Elementary Education.

Students seeking certification in Elementary Education are required to take a minimum of 12 semester hours in each of the following areas: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences.

Collaborative K-6 (special education) endorsement added to Elementary

Study for a certificate in Elementary Education allows for a Collaborative K-6 endorsement with the completion of additional classes. The endorsement certifies that the recipient is qualified to teach in all areas of special education except for the areas of sensory impairments and gifted. Additional requirements for the endorsement include SPED 416 , SPED 440 , and SPED 462 , along with an internship in an appropriate collaborative setting.

Secondary Education

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education meets requirements for an Alabama Class B (Grades 6-12) certificate. Study for a B.A. instead of a B.S. degree requires a conference with an advisor.

Secondary-school certification is only available in the following field at the undergraduate level:

  • Family and Consumer Sciences

Secondary education is available in other fields only at the graduate level. Refer to the Graduate Bulletin for information about additional fields of secondary education.
