Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences

Mission

The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences explores the human condition in all of its richness and complexity. While focusing on the development of the essential skills of critical analysis in the disciplines of anthropology, geography, history, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology, the department fosters a commitment and capacity for informed citizenship. As active citizens, students gain an understanding of diverse social perspectives and evaluate culturally-based values and beliefs. Finally, the department instills in its graduates the ability and desire to recognize and appreciate learning as a life-long process.

Graduate Offerings

No graduate degree is offered in the department; however, students pursuing Secondary Education, Alternative, M.Ed.  or Secondary Education, Professional Educators, M.Ed.  with certification in Social Science or History may take department courses to fulfill teaching-field requirements. Students who have taken slash-listed courses at the undergraduate level may not also receive credit for same courses at the graduate level, with the exception of the internships, directed readings, and special topics. For information on the M.Ed. programs, refer to the appropriate section under the Department of Teaching, Leadership, & Technology .
