SPED 540 - Teaching Students with Moderate and/or Severe Disabilities 3 credit hours - This course provides in-depth coverage of the pedagogy used in planning instructional strategies and forms of support needed for students with moderate and severe disabilities. Topics include identification of the population, service delivery, the roles and responsibilities of professionals, ethical considerations for curriculum development, the impact of cultural and linguistic diversity on learning, collaboration with families, and best instructional practices in inclusive and non-inclusive settings. Additional topics will include accessing the general education curriculum, models for determining appropriate accommodations and modifications to curriculum, instruction, materials, and transition. Finally, collaboration with schools and community agencies will be discussed. In this course, candidates plan for specialized instruction based on the specific needs of students with mild/moderate disabilities. Candidates use evidence-based methods to teach/support academic core content areas such as math, reading, and writing. Prerequisite(s) with concurrency allowed: SPED 507 .
