Secondary Education, Professional Educators, M.Ed.

The Professional Educator Master’s is for those who have earned a Class B certification in one of the following areas: art, biology, elementary education, English/language arts, family and consumer science (FCS), general science, history, mathematics or social science and desire advanced certification in the same area. The Professional Educator Master’s program leads to a Class A professional educator certification. 

Program Admission Requirements:

  • A completed application at www.montevallo.edu/admissions-aid/applying/
  • One official transcript from each institution of higher education attended
  • 2.75 undergraduate graduating GPA or 3.0 master’s degree graduating GPA from a regionally accredited college or university
  • A valid Alabama Class B certificate in the same teaching field in which Class A certification is sought
  • Two professional letters of recommendation

Retention and Completion Requirements

  • Maintain a 3.25 program GPA
  • Complete all required coursework with a grade of “C” or higher
  • Complete SPED 407/507  or equivalent, if not previously completed

Curriculum Outline (18-21 credit hours)


Teaching Field (12 credit hours)


Students must take 12 total graduate (500 level) hours in their teaching field. Comprehensive areas (English/Language Arts, General Science, and General Social Science) must include at least one course in two areas of the broader field. Undergraduate courses with equivalent content cannot be repeated for graduate credit.
