ASL 200 - American Sign Language I/Deaf Culture 3 credit hours This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), emphasizing correct production of the ASL manual alphabet and establishing a basic sign language vocabulary. The course emphasizes the development of basic manual communication skills including: (1) finger spelling skills, using the American Manual Alphabet, (2) receptive ASL skills, and (3) expressive ASL skills. Additional courses will be needed to acquire fluency in communicating with individuals who are deaf. Students will also gain knowledge in the areas of Deaf culture and traditions, the history of sign language, and the use of sign language in social, educational, and work settings.
