Mission

The mission of the Social Work Program is to provide a professional education for beginning-level generalist practice, with an emphasis on the poor, vulnerable, and undeserved. Generalist practice is founded upon the purposes and core values of the social work profession. The program emphasizes the application of high-quality generalist practice skills across the lifespan and across systems of all sizes (individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations) to meet the specific needs and challenges of vulnerable populations.  

The mission of the Speech-Language Pathology program is to establish and provide distinctive academic programs for students in Speech-Language Pathology collaborations with community partners, and service to individuals with communication, voice, and swallowing disorders across the life span. The program is committed to preparing students to become dedicated, competent clinical leaders in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. The curriculum cultivates comprehensive, l professional awareness and emphasizes the problem-solving and critical thinking skills necessary to become strong professionals capable of serving varied client populations.

Accreditation

The undergraduate program in Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

The Master of Science (M.S.) education program in Speech-Language Pathology (residential) at the University of Montevallo is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard #310, Rockville, Maryland 20850, 800-498-2071 or (301) 296-5700.

General Education

All students seeking an undergraduate degree at UM must complete a core General Education curriculum that includes courses in English, history, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, fine arts, oral and written communication, and personal development. The Social Work program offers the following courses to fulfill the Social and Behavioral Sciences component of the UM General Education requirements: SWK 203 260 , and 322 . The minimum requirements can be found in the General Education Credit Hour Requirements section of the Undergraduate Academic Policies  section in this Bulletin.

Degree Programs

The Department grants the B.A. and B.S. degrees in Social Work and the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).

A master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology will be required in order to obtain the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and a license to practice in most states, including Alabama. Refer to the Graduate Bulletin for more information on the M.S. SLP program.
