Teacher Leadership, Ed.S.

The Educational Specialist Program in Teacher Leadership is for educators in grades P-12 who have earned a master’s degree or higher in a related field. The Teacher Leadership program is designed to equip and empower teachers to assume more active roles in school improvement and effective collaboration, while providing teachers the opportunity to increase instructional expertise, foster excellence in teaching and learning, advocate for students and communities and engage in educational research.

TL applicants are eligible to dually enroll in the Instructional Leadership, Reduced-Hour Option for Certification. The student would earn their Ed.S. in Teacher Leadership and a Class A in Instructional Leadership, concurrently. Candidates must meet the admission requirements for both degree programs.

Program Admission Requirements:

  • A completed application and application fee available at montevallo.edu/admissions-aid/applying
  • Anofficial transcript from each institution of higher education attended
  • 3.00 graduating GPA in a master’s degree program from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Valid Class A certification in any teaching field, grade level, or area of instructional support
  • EXP form documenting at least three years teaching experience in a P-12 setting
  • Three letters of recommendation 
  • Professional portfolio demonstrating the ability to improve student achievement and leadership potential


No credit toward the Ed.S. will be awarded to students who have not been admitted officially to the program(s).

Retention and Completion Requirements for Ed.S

  • Maintain a minimum 3.50 program GPA on all coursework
  • A passing score on a comprehensive assessment, which includes action research documentation and formal presentation
