Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Development and Family Studies, B.A.


Building on the foundation of liberal studies, the Family and Consumer Sciences program prepares students to engage family and consumer issues in pursuit of “meaningful employment.” Moreover, the FCS program core is predicated on personal growth in the context of family and community. Hospitality and tourism is truly complimentary as a multidisciplinary program, which promises to draw upon faculty and courses from several Departments and Colleges throughout the University of Montevallo.

Hospitality = the comfort and wellbeing of guests at a variety of events and establishments.

  •  Hospitality field covers all aspects of hospitality operations including hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, country clubs, and convention centers.

Tourism = the movement of people to places outside their usual environment.

  •  Tourism field covers tourism development, tourism services, travel industry management and tourism marketing

Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Development and Family Studies, B.A. or B.S.


The Human Development and Family Studies Concentration is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in human resources, child and family services, and preschool teaching and administration. The National Council on Family Relations has approved the program to award Family Life Educator certification (CFLE). Human Development and Family Studies majors are able to earn CFLE certification without having to pass the CFLE examination. Human Development and Family Life Studies majors are required to complete a professional internship. In addition to the requirements listed below, students must meet all general graduation requirements as listed in the Undergraduate Academic Policies  section in this Bulletin. A minimum of 120 semester hours is required for completion.

General Education and General Electives


Students must also complete the General Education Core requirements to include any specific courses listed below. Students must also complete sufficient general electives to reach 120 or more total semester hours.

Bachelor of Arts Requirements


Students pursuing the Bachelor of Art degree must successfully complete the second-year sequence of a world language. Alternative options, including a placement exam, are listed in the Bachelor of Arts requirements in the Undergraduate Academic Policies  section of this Bulletin.
