Music, Choral Education, B.M.

The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) degree is the professional approach to the music major for the student who wants a strong foundation in music, combined with in-depth training in specific aspects of the art. The department offers concentrations in Choral or Instrumental Music Education and Performance (guitar, percussion, piano, strings, vocal, or winds).

Designed for those who plan to teach in grades P-12, the concentration in Music Education leads to state teaching certification. Students earning this degree concentration must qualify for admission to the Teacher Education Program of the College of Education and Human Development , and must perform a half recital during the senior year.

Students may adopt either a general/choral emphasis or an instrumental emphasis. Those in the general/choral area must also select either voice, guitar or piano as a primary performance area, and must follow it consistently throughout the degree program.

In addition to the requirements listed below, students must meet all general graduation requirements as listed in the Academic Programs and Policies  section in this bulletin. A minimum of 130-131 semester hours is required for completion.

Admission to a degree program or minor in music is based on an audition in the primary performance area.

General Education

A minimum grade of C in all General Education courses will be required for admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). The General Education core curriculum, described in the Academic Programs and Policies  section of this Bulletin, applies to all students pursuing the B.M. in Music-Choral Education with the following exceptions. Students must also complete sufficient general electives to reach 130-131 or more total semester hours.
