The University of Montevallo College of Health Professions offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The BSN degree may be completed through the Pre-licensure BSN track or the RN to BSN track. Both program tracks prepare graduates for generalist practice to provide direct and indirect care to individuals, families, groups, communities, or populations. .

The BSN graduate is prepared to provide comprehensive care in a variety of acute, community and rehabilitative settings. Program emphasis includes clinical nursing practice, health promotion and maintenance, hands-on experience across the continuum of care, and preparation for assuming leadership roles and graduate study in nursing. The baccalaureate curriculum provides a solid foundation for graduate study. The BSN program is approved by the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Pre-licensure BSN Program Admission

The University of Montevallo (UM) Pre-licensure BSN program is a specialized admission program, which means admission to UM does not guarantee admission to the nursing program. You must first be admitted to UM through the Office of Admissions prior to applying to the BSN program. Admission to the program is competitive and spaces are limited. When the number of students applying to the program exceeds the number of spaces available, the most qualified applicants will be admitted based on the admission requirements.

In addition to the University’s general admission requirements as described in the Undergraduate Admissions section of the Bulletin, students seeking admission to the BSN program must meet the following additional requirements at the time of application:

  • ATI TEAS score at 80 or above

  • A minimum of a 2.5 GPA  and grades of “C” or better in all required pre-nursing courses, including all general education, BIO 201, BIO 202, and the support courses listed on the Nursing BSN Program Degree Plan.

  • A minimum of a 2.5 GPA in required science courses, including BIO 105, BIO 201, BIO 202, BIO 300, CHEM 101 or 121, CHEM 102 or 122.

  • Documentation of required program immunizations.

Enrollment Requirements

Upon admission all BSN students will receive information concerning current UM Nursing requirements for enrollment. These include but may not be limited to: student health physical examination; clinical agency required immunizations; Level 2 criminal background check; fingerprinting; American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support certification; and drug screen.

Progression

The minimum passing grade for a Nursing curriculum required course is a “C.” A course may be repeated only one time if a grade lower than a “C” is made, and the hours will be counted as hours attempted. Courses may be repeated only at UM.

Students must remain in compliance with all nursing program requirements as outlined in the BSN Program Handbook. Failure to maintain the academic and professional standards specified in the BSN Program student handbook may result in dismissal from the BSN program.

In addition to the requirements listed below, students must meet all general graduation requirements as listed in the Undergraduate Academic Policies  section in this Bulletin. A minimum of 120 semester hours is required for completion.
