Program Admission Requirements:

  • Admission to the Teacher Education Program occurs when a candidate is unconditionally admitted to the University’s graduate program. The following criteria must be completed to achieve both unconditional admission to the University, as well as admission to the Teacher Education Program.

  • Completed application available at www.montevallo.edu/apply
  • An official transcript from each institution of higher education attended
  • Meets one of the following criteria related to GPA:
    • Bachelor’s degree with an overall GPA of at least 2.75
    • Bachelor’s degree with an overall GPA between 2.0 - 2.74 AND an accompanying alternative Praxis II score (please see testing information linked below)
    • Master’s degree or higher with an overall GPA of at least 3.0
  • Satisfactory score(s) on Praxis examination(s). View the linked test codes and required scores for admission to graduate studies and the Teacher Education Program.
  • Fingerprinting and Background Clearance
  • Teacher Education Program interview

TEP Retention

  • Maintain minimum 3.25 GPA (Teaching Field, Professional Studies, and UM Overall)
  • All coursework completed with a minimum grade of “C”. Students will be allowed one repeat to improve a course grade lower than a “C”.
  • Fewer than three incident reports

Progression to Internship

  • Completion of all prerequisite coursework
  • Teaching Reading (test code: 5204)
    • 155 Minimum Score Requirement. Effective 9/1/18, a score of 159 will be required.
    • Official score report must be received by TES prior to internship semester
  • Special Education Praxis (test code: 5354)
    • 153 Minimum Score Requirement.
    • Official score report must be received by TES prior to internship semester.   
  • Satisfactory completion of all program expectations, including field experiences, key assessments, and disposition assessments
  • Submitted application for internship by the posted deadline

Program Completion

  • 3.25 graduating GPA with a final grade of C or better in all Professional Studies and Teaching Field courses
  • Successful completion (final grade of C or better) of the following courses:
    • EDI 560 , 561 , or 563 : Internship in Collaborative Education
    • EDI 599 : Intern Certification Preparation
  • Satisfactory internship evaluations
  • edTPA Performance Portfolio Tasks (1, 2, and 3)
