Music, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in music provides for the study of music within the context of the liberal-arts curriculum. Most students earning the B.A. degree are interested in a broad education that includes general education, music courses, and elective study outside of music. In addition to the requirements listed below, students must meet all general graduation requirements as listed in the Undergraduate Academic Policies  section in this Bulletin. A minimum of 120 semester hours is required for completion.

Admission to a degree program or minor in music is based on an audition in the primary performance area. 


A minimum grade of C is required for all music courses. Students may attempt a course no more than twice to earn a minimum final grade of C. 

 

Applied Studies


  • Primary Instrument or Vocal Study
    • MUP 1xx (1 credit hour x 2 semesters)
    • MUP 2xx (1 credit hour x 2 semesters)
    • MUP 3xx (1 credit hour x 2 semesters)
  • MUP 1xx - Ensemble (choose based on primary), (1 credit hour x 4 semesters)

Secondary Instrument


Advanced Studies


Choose 8 hours from the following areas primary instrument: Diction, Pedagogy, Literature, Piano, Theory, Music Technology and Conducting.

Area Studies


Minor and General Elective Studies (limit 3 hours MUS/MUP)

General Education


Students must also complete the General Education Core requirements to include any specific courses listed below. Students must also complete sufficient general electives to reach 120 or more total semester hours.

  • Humanities & Fine Arts: MUS 342  
  • Personal Development: MUS 228  

Bachelor of Art Requirements


Students pursuing the Bachelor of Art degree must successfully complete the second-year sequence of a foreign language.
