The School Counseling track is designed to prepare school counselors at the elementary and secondary levels. The State Board of Education has approved this program concentration for the Alabama Class A Certificate in School Counseling. Students graduating with this major may become employed in public or private schools, educationally oriented community agencies, and innovative school programs that may operate within treatment centers.

Counseling Program Admission and Application Requirements
Program Admission
The graduate Counseling Program has two admission cycles each year for the fall and spring semesters. The admission process is competitive.
Application Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university;
- Recommended undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 or higher (2.75 for School Counseling concentration);
- Admission interview with Program Faculty;
- Statement of purpose regarding why the candidate wants to pursue a career in counseling;
- Two professional letters of reference; and
- Evidence of a clear criminal background check.
Program Retention
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 (4.0 scale) program GPA.
- Minimum passing grade for all courses of a C or better (excludes practicum & internship courses)
- Successful student evaluation related to Program Objectives and Program Professional Dispositions each.
Completion Requirements
- Passing score on the Counseling Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE).
- Minimum grade of B or higher in Practicum and Internship classes; and
- Accrue all direct and indirect service hours.
